Born March 20, 1927 in Fairview community near Dawson, O’Shields was a three-sport star at Geraldine, graduating in 1947. He attended Jacksonville State, lettering three years at running back and safety. He became head football coach at Cleveland in 1951. O’Shields coached there for 15 years until his retirement in 1983. He won consecutive state championships in 1972 and 1973. His overall coaching record was 243-74-13. At the time 243 wins was a state record.
