Born January 13, 1949 in Gadsden, Alabama, Gilbert is a 1967 graduate of Geraldine High School where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. Gilbert also received All-County and All-State honors in football and was a 1967 Alabama High School All-Star. He was awarded a four-year football scholarship to the University of Alabama and was a three-year letterman and Permanent Team Captain from 1970-71.
