Played football and basketball at Fyffe from 1949-1951. Led Fyffe to state tournament in basketball. He was named All District in 1948-1949. In the 1950-1951 season he was voted district MVP. He received a basketball scholarship to Tennessee Tech but transferred to Snead State Junior College.At Snead he made All-SEC of Junior Colleges in 1951-1952. When Snead dropped basketball he transferred to Centenary in Shreveport, Louisiana where he played for three years.
