The Class of 2024 has been announced! Eight individuals will be honored with induction into the DeKalb County Sports Hall of Fame<\/a>, celebrating their remarkable achievements across various athletic domains, including one individual recognized for his impactful contributions through sports journalism in northeast Alabama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This 18th class will be officially inducted on June 15 during a special banquet held at the DeKalb County Schools Coliseum in Rainsville. C.M. Sanford, President of the DeKalb County Sports Hall of Fame Board of Directors, enthusiastically shared this news. Tickets for the banquet, commencing at 6 p.m., will go on sale in March and can be purchased from any board member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the induction ceremony, the event will feature the presentation of scholarships to four deserving students from DeKalb County. Furthermore, two esteemed coaches from the county will be recognized for their dedicated service to both their respective schools and the wider community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the distinguished honorees is DeWayne Patterson, whose illustrious career spanning nearly 34 years in the newspaper industry culminated in his role as publisher of the Jackson County Sentinel. However, Patterson’s true passion lay in sports journalism, where he provided extensive coverage of high school sports in Sand Mountain and Jackson County, fueled by a love for writing that blossomed in his early years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ronnie Crabtree, a standout athlete at Fort Payne High School<\/a> across four sports, returned to his alma mater as a coach after earning a scholarship to Marion Military Institute and Arkansas Tech. His coaching tenure, particularly in baseball, saw remarkable success, including multiple area and county championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bobby Holloway, renowned for his prowess in basketball, amassed an impressive 506 career wins during his tenure as a teacher and coach at Valley Head High School. His leadership extended across various sports, with notable achievements including state final appearances in basketball and track, alongside successful volleyball seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hillary Phillips Wigley distinguished herself at Ider High School, setting numerous records in fast-pitch softball and basketball, including career wins, strikeouts, and shutouts. Her legacy in athletics remains unparalleled, marked by a multitude of accomplishments throughout her career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jamie Phillips Vest’s athletic journey began in seventh grade at Valley Head and continues today as she serves as both a health teacher and coach at her alma mater. Her remarkable achievements in volleyball, softball, and basketball have left an indelible mark on DeKalb County sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mickey Willingham’s dominance across football, basketball, and baseball at Plainview High School during the late 1970s and early 1980s earned him widespread acclaim, including All-County, All-Area, and All-State honors in all three sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Curtis McDaniel’s football prowess took him from Fort Payne High School to professional leagues, including a stint with the Seattle Seahawks and the London Monarchs. His impressive career trajectory was marked by stellar performances both on the field and at the collegiate level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul Benefield’s coaching legacy spans multiple schools, including Plainview, Sylvania, and Fyffe High School, where he achieved unparalleled success with numerous state championships and regional titles. Recognized as Alabama Coach of the Year and inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, Benefield’s impact on the sporting landscape is truly remarkable, with his journey far from over.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
